In recent years, Ozempic (semaglutide) and tirzepatide have become game-changers in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, one lesser-known side effect of rapid weight loss caused by these medications is something many people are calling Ozempic Face or Tirzepatide Face. But what exactly does this mean for your facial appearance, and how can you manage these changes?
What is Ozempic and Tirzepatide?
Ozempic is a medication primarily prescribed for individuals with type 2 diabetes. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes weight loss by slowing down gastric emptying, increasing insulin sensitivity, and reducing appetite. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) works on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, leading to even more impressive weight loss results in some cases.
Both drugs have proven highly effective for people struggling with obesity — but they also come with a range of side effects, including the risk of Ozempic Face or Tirzepatide Face: the facial changes that some individuals experience due to rapid loss of fat.
What is Ozempic Face?
Ozempic Face describes the changes that occur in the face when weight is lost rapidly due to medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide. When people lose weight quickly, the body sheds both fat and muscle, which can cause a significant decrease in facial volume. The face contains subcutaneous fat that contributes to its smooth, youthful contours. When this fat is lost rapidly, the skin may not have enough time to adjust, leading to sagging, hollowness under the eyes, or a more angular, gaunt look.
The changes are often more noticeable in individuals who have experienced significant weight loss — particularly around the cheeks, jawline, and neck. While the primary concern is cosmetic, it can also affect a person's confidence and self-esteem, making them feel older than they actually are.
How Does Rapid Weight Loss Affect the Face?
As we age, the production of collagen and elastin in the skin decreases, causing it to lose firmness and elasticity. When weight loss happens gradually, the skin has more time to adjust. However, with rapid weight loss — as seen with these medications — the skin may not be able to shrink and contract quickly enough, leading to sagging, wrinkles, and volume loss.
Some people also notice more prominent lines around the mouth, deeper nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth), or hollowness under the eyes. In extreme cases, this can alter the shape of the face, making it look less youthful and healthy.
Can a Facelift Help?
If you are experiencing Ozempic Face or Tirzepatide Face, a facelift or facial fat grafting may be a great option to restore your youthful appearance. A facelift (rhytidectomy) targets sagging skin and muscle tissue of the face and neck, lifting the skin, tightening the underlying muscles, and removing excess skin to create a smoother, more youthful look.
A facelift can address:
- Hollow cheeks: Lifting the skin and smoothing this area when fat has been lost.
- Sagging jawline: Tightening the skin along the jaw and neck for a sharper, more defined contour.
- Neck sagging: A neck lift improves the appearance of the neck by tightening the skin and muscle layers.
A facelift can also be combined with fat transfer or dermal fillers to restore volume to the face.
Non-Surgical Alternatives
Many individuals may not be ready for surgery or prefer a non-surgical approach. Fortunately, there are several options:
- Dermal Fillers: Injectable fillers like Hyaluronic Acid (Restylane, Juvederm) restore volume to the cheeks, under-eyes, and around the mouth, adding immediate fullness and smoothness.
- Fat Transfer: Harvesting fat from another area of the body and injecting it into the face offers a more natural look using the body's own fat.
- Botox and Dysport: These neuromodulators smooth fine lines and wrinkles. While they don't restore volume, they create a refreshed appearance.
- Microneedling or Radiofrequency: These treatments stimulate collagen production to tighten and rejuvenate the skin over time. We have found these to be a nice option to do even while on medically supervised weight loss.
- Sculptra: We like to add Sculptra when needed and perform radiofrequency microneedling during the weight loss journey so we don't end up with severe laxity and volume loss.
When Should You Wait Before Getting a Facelift?
One important consideration is timing. For best results, it's generally advised to wait until your weight has stabilized before undergoing a facelift or any other surgical procedure. This ensures that the face has settled into its new contours and that the results will be long-lasting.
If your weight is still fluctuating, your surgeon may recommend non-surgical treatments like fillers first, to restore volume gradually. Once weight has been stable for 3–6 months, surgical options become more viable.
