What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Andre Y. Levesque, MD · Board-certified plastic surgeon (ABPS) · Last reviewed December 18, 2025

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a smaller, lighter, better-proportioned breast that is more comfortable and easier to live with. It is one of the highest-satisfaction procedures in all of plastic surgery — most patients describe it as life-changing.

Dr. Andre Y. Levesque performs breast reduction in Austin, TX. The procedure simultaneously reduces breast size, reshapes breast contour, and repositions the nipple-areola complex to a natural, aesthetically pleasing position. The result is a breast that is not only smaller but also more youthful in shape.

Please note: breast reduction at Levesque Plastic Surgery is offered as a self-pay procedure. After years of dwindling insurance reimbursement — and outright denials of breast reductions we had already performed — we no longer accept new insurance patients and do not bill medical insurance, outside of on-call, trauma-based hospital care. Dr. Levesque provides a transparent price quoted in advance, and financing is available through CareCredit, Alphaeon, Cherry, and PatientFi.

Most patients describe immediate, dramatic relief from physical symptoms — back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, and rashes — within weeks of surgery. The aesthetic improvement is equally transformative: a proportionate figure that fits clothing better and allows for more comfortable physical activity.

What Sets Dr. Levesque Apart

Physical Relief. Aesthetic Transformation.

Breast reduction surgery achieves two goals simultaneously: medical and aesthetic. Dr. Levesque removes the excess tissue causing physical symptoms while simultaneously reshaping the breast into a naturally full, youthful contour at the new, smaller size. The result is both comfortable and beautiful.

He uses the vertical (lollipop) or inverted-T (anchor) technique based on the volume to be removed and your breast anatomy. His scar management approach — tension-free closure, silicone scar therapy, sun protection — minimizes the appearance of scars over time.

Functional + Aesthetic Goals
The procedure addresses both the physical symptoms of macromastia and the aesthetic proportionality patients desire — removing excess tissue while reshaping remaining breast tissue into a natural, youthful contour.
Transparent Self-Pay Pricing
Breast reduction is offered as a self-pay procedure with a price quoted in advance — we no longer accept new insurance patients. Financing through CareCredit, Alphaeon, Cherry, and PatientFi helps make it manageable.
Preserved Sensation & Breastfeeding
Most patients retain nipple sensation and breastfeeding capability after reduction, particularly with the inferior pedicle or vertical techniques Dr. Levesque uses.
Simultaneous Lift
Breast reduction inherently lifts the breast by removing skin and repositioning the nipple-areola complex — patients achieve both reduction and a lifted position in one procedure.
Your Journey

What to Expect

From your first consultation to your final result, here's how the process works at Levesque Plastic Surgery.

01

Consultation

Dr. Levesque evaluates your breast anatomy, assesses symmetry, discusses target size, and reviews your transparent self-pay pricing. He explains the technique and expected scar pattern.

02

Surgery Day

Breast reduction takes 2.5–3.5 hours under general anesthesia. Excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned. You go home the same day.

03

Recovery & Results

Most patients take 1–2 weeks off work. Physical symptoms often improve dramatically within days. Full activity resumes at 4–6 weeks. Final shape settles over 4–6 months as swelling resolves.

Is This Right for You?

Am I a Candidate?

Here's a general guide — Dr. Levesque will assess your candidacy personally at consultation.

Good Candidates Typically Have:

  • Chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain attributed to breast weight
  • Shoulder grooving from bra straps
  • Rash, irritation, or skin breakdown under the breasts
  • Difficulty with physical activity due to breast size
  • Proportionality concerns — breasts feel out of proportion with frame
  • Stable weight and good overall health

Factors That May Affect Candidacy:

  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Planning significant future pregnancies (results may be affected)
  • Active smoking — increases wound healing complications
  • BMI over 40 — weight loss before surgery generally recommended

His goal is not just a smaller breast, but a beautifully shaped one. He reshapes remaining tissue at the same time as reducing volume, producing a breast that is not only smaller but also more youthful and proportionate.

Common Questions

Breast Reduction FAQ

No — I don't accept new insurance patients or bill medical insurance for breast reduction. After years of dwindling reimbursement, and outright denials of reductions I had already performed, I stepped away from insurance (outside of on-call, trauma-based hospital care). I perform breast reduction as a self-pay procedure with a transparent price quoted in advance, and financing is available through CareCredit, Alphaeon, Cherry, and PatientFi. Call 512-487-5975 and we'll talk it through.
Most of my patients keep their nipple sensation, especially with the inferior-pedicle and vertical techniques I use, which keep the nipple on a well-supplied pedicle of tissue. Some temporary numbness while you heal is normal. Permanent loss is possible but uncommon with these techniques, and I'll go over it with you at your consultation.
Breast reduction is a self-pay procedure at my practice — I don't bill insurance. The cost depends on the technique and how long the surgery takes, and I'll give you a transparent quote at your consultation. Financing is available through CareCredit, Alphaeon, Cherry, and PatientFi. Call 512-487-5975 to schedule.
Many of my patients can still breastfeed afterward, but I can't guarantee it for anyone. The inferior-pedicle and vertical techniques I use keep the nipple and areola on a pedicle that preserves the milk-duct connections. That said, breastfeeding success varies from person to person — so if it's important to you, let's talk about it at your consultation.
Most patients take 1–2 weeks off work. The relief from back and shoulder pain often shows up within the first week, which patients love. If I use drains, they usually come out within a day or two. I'll have you hold off on upper-body exercise for 4–6 weeks, and your final shape settles over about 4–6 months.
You're likely a good candidate if you have symptoms from the weight — back pain, shoulder grooving, rashes — or you're bothered by the proportion. Most of my patients are at a stable weight and done with (or not planning) breastfeeding. The best way to know is to come in; I'll assess you personally and let you know whether a breast reduction is a good fit for you.
