What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?
✓ Medically reviewed by Dr. Andre Y. Levesque, MD · Board-certified plastic surgeon (ABPS) · Last reviewed December 18, 2025
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a smaller, lighter, better-proportioned breast that is more comfortable and easier to live with. It is one of the highest-satisfaction procedures in all of plastic surgery — most patients describe it as life-changing.
Dr. Andre Y. Levesque performs breast reduction in Austin, TX. The procedure simultaneously reduces breast size, reshapes breast contour, and repositions the nipple-areola complex to a natural, aesthetically pleasing position. The result is a breast that is not only smaller but also more youthful in shape.
Please note: breast reduction at Levesque Plastic Surgery is offered as a self-pay procedure. After years of dwindling insurance reimbursement — and outright denials of breast reductions we had already performed — we no longer accept new insurance patients and do not bill medical insurance, outside of on-call, trauma-based hospital care. Dr. Levesque provides a transparent price quoted in advance, and financing is available through CareCredit, Alphaeon, Cherry, and PatientFi.
Most patients describe immediate, dramatic relief from physical symptoms — back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, and rashes — within weeks of surgery. The aesthetic improvement is equally transformative: a proportionate figure that fits clothing better and allows for more comfortable physical activity.
Physical Relief. Aesthetic Transformation.
Breast reduction surgery achieves two goals simultaneously: medical and aesthetic. Dr. Levesque removes the excess tissue causing physical symptoms while simultaneously reshaping the breast into a naturally full, youthful contour at the new, smaller size. The result is both comfortable and beautiful.
He uses the vertical (lollipop) or inverted-T (anchor) technique based on the volume to be removed and your breast anatomy. His scar management approach — tension-free closure, silicone scar therapy, sun protection — minimizes the appearance of scars over time.
What to Expect
From your first consultation to your final result, here's how the process works at Levesque Plastic Surgery.
Consultation
Dr. Levesque evaluates your breast anatomy, assesses symmetry, discusses target size, and reviews your transparent self-pay pricing. He explains the technique and expected scar pattern.
Surgery Day
Breast reduction takes 2.5–3.5 hours under general anesthesia. Excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned. You go home the same day.
Recovery & Results
Most patients take 1–2 weeks off work. Physical symptoms often improve dramatically within days. Full activity resumes at 4–6 weeks. Final shape settles over 4–6 months as swelling resolves.
